Children's Illustrator Beth Krush Dies, Age 90

Beth Krush, who with her husband Joe illustrated classic children's literature including Mary Norton's THE BORROWERS, Virginia Sorenson's MIRACLES ON MAPLE HILL, and Beverly Cleary's SISTER OF THE BRIDE, has died at 90.

I particularly liked her illustrations for Sydney Taylor's ALL-OF-A-KIND FAMILY DOWNTOWN and Elizabeth Enright's GONE-AWAY LAKE.

Mrs. Krush is survived by her husband and illustrating partner, Joe.

Oh gosh, I have the sweetest memories of Sydney Taylor's All-of-a-Kind-Family series. Delightful books...Krush's illustrations had a unique signature to them - a bit chaotic, fun, and full of whimsy. I'm happy to know she lived a long, art filled life.

Weren't the ALL-OF-A-KIND books wonderful? I read them over and over. I recall the dusting/button game especially fondly, and the visit to the candy store...

Best wishes,
Laura

Beth was my teacher, my mentor, and my friend. I studied with her at Moore College of Art. She was the most wonderful teacher...She was enthusiastic in sharing her love for art, and generous with her help to everyone.

I was able to see the All-of-a-Kind Family illustrations that Beth and Joe did while they were in process, and to hear them discuss how they developed the visual character of each character in the story.

She was just a fantastic person, in every way. She had a merry laugh, and took such joy in everything!

Thank you so much for sharing your memories, Nancy. What a wonder that you saw the illustrations I've enjoyed so much as they were created! And it's always nice to hear that someone whose work one has admired was also an admirable person.

Best wishes,
Laura

I am so fortunate to be able to say that Beth was my teacher, my mentor and ultimately my friend!

She was such a loving person, so generous with her time and encouragement with all of her students.

She and Joe opened their home to their students. I was privileged to see the illustrations for The All of a Kind Family in process, as Beth and Joe planned and executed the drawings.

Beth had a merry laugh, a marvelous sense of humor, and a sweet and loving nature. We all adored her!

Hi Nancy!

You probably re-sent a note thinking the first one hadn't posted because the comments are moderated...I'm posting your second note because I enjoyed the additional details! Thanks so much for taking the time to post this tribute to your mentor and friend.

Best wishes,
Laura
